Three Técnico projects selected in the Science4Policy competition

Three of the 18 projects approved in the 2nd edition of the Science for Public Policy competition were authored by Técnico researchers.

In February, the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) launched the 2nd edition of the Science Studies for Public Policy (Science4Policy) competition in partnership with PlanAPP – Competence Centre for Planning, Policy and Foresight in Public Administration. Three projects developed by researchers and professors at Instituto Superior Técnico were approved.

Long-Term Strategy for the Renovation, Rehabilitation and Reconversion of Buildings: habitability, energy, materials and water (ECO_HELPRE)

The “ECO-HELPRE” project, led by Joana Mourão, a researcher at the  Center for Innovation in Territory, Urbanism and Architecture (CiTUA), aims to draw up recommendations and indicators for a national programme for building renovation and reconversion. The aim is to improve habitability, comfort, health and salubrity in an appropriate and accessible way. This will encourage the optimisation of environmental performance while conserving the building, saving energy and emissions, materials and water.

Planning interventions to mitigate soil sealing impacts and to improve climate change adaptation in urban areas (UnSealingCities)

Maria Beatriz Condessa, a professor at the Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture and the Environment and a researcher at the Centre for Innovation in Territory, Urbanism and Architecture (CiTUA), is responsible for the “UnSealingCities” project that aims to draw up recommendations to control soil sealing in cities and increase their resilience to excessive heat, flooding and air pollution peaks.

The future of Lisbon Port-City interactions (CidadeportoTejo)

The “CidadeportoTejo” project, led by Ana Morais de Sá, a professor at the Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Environment (DECivil) and researcher at the Centre for Innovation in Territory, Urbanism and Architecture (CiTUA), aims to lay the groundwork for urban planning in port-cities in response to sociodemographic shifts concerning ports’ energy transition.

These studies will seek to respond to “specific public policy needs identified by the Planning and Foresight Services Network of the Public Administration (RePLAN), within the framework of the Thematic Agendas of the Portugal 2030 Strategy”. Each project will culminate in a set of “reasoned recommendations for the problems identified”, according to FCT.
