Eleven Técnico professors were elected members of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences in the most diverse areas of knowledge. Five professors were elected as full members and six as corresponding members. The aim of the Academy is to encourage scientific research, promote national culture, collaborate in education and teaching activities, and contribute to the discussion of ideas.
The Academy consists of two academic classes – the class of science and the class of letters – and each class consists of emeritus and corresponding members, organised into nine sections. The members are chosen from among the Portuguese citizens who have produced scientific or literary work of recognised merit.
Técnico professors elected as full members:
• João Pedro Conde, Head of the Department of Bioengineering (DBE) – 2nd class of science – Physics section;
• Carlos de Sousa Oliveira, retired professor of the Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Georesources (DECivil) – 7th class of science – Engineering Sciences section;
• António Reis, retired professor of the Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Georesources (DECivil) – 7th class of science – Engineering Sciences section;
• José Fonseca de Moura, alumnus, former professor of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC) and Honoris Causa – 8th class of science – Science and Information Technologies section;
• Rui Silva Martins, professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC) – 7th class of science – Engineering Sciences section.
Técnico professors elected corresponding members:
• Miguel Tribolet de Abreu, Department of Mathematics (DM) – 1st class of science – Mathematics section;
• Vítor Cardoso, Department of Physics (DF) – 2nd class of science – Physics section;
• Yasser Omar, Department of Mathematics (DM) – 2nd class of science – Physics section;
• Maria Fátima Guedes Silva, Department of Chemical Engineering (DEQ) – 3rd class of science – Chemistry section;
• José Santos-Victor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC) – 7th class of science – Engineering Sciences section;
• Mário Silveirinha, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC) – 8th class of science – Sciences and Information Technologies section.
Some duties of a corresponding member are attendance at plenary sessions, participation in the works of the Academy, and promoting the activities of the sections to which they belong. The full members, on the other hand, are responsible for leading the scientific, literary and administrative activity, electing and being elected to academic positions, and presenting their communications, reports, proposals and suggestions for works, among other prestigious activities.
The official ceremony will take place on 7th July 2022.
