EGI seminar series focused on the future of industry

For the first time, the event organised by the Industrial Engineering and Management Student Group (NEEGI) lasted four days and included a job fair that gathered about 15 companies.

The 4th edition of Industrial Engineering and Management seminar series (EGI Seminar Series) took place at Taguspark campus. This year’s edition included a job fair which, according to Sofia Sarmento – coordinator of EGI seminar series, “has been a success. Almost everyone at Taguspark visited the job fair, even students from other courses want to learn more about these companies”.

Worten, Lidl, Deloitte, KPMG and Sonae were some of the companies that participated in the job fair and captivated students attention during the first two days of the event, which started this Tuesday, March 13th. “Most of the companies represented in this fair are related to our course and provide information about job offers, professional internships, summer internships and many other information”, explains Sofia Sarmento.

This year, EGI seminar series will last four days and will include several activities in order to promote exchange of experiences. “Our course has a lot of job opportunities and employers are interested in Industrial Engineering and Management students, so it is very important to organise EGI seminar series,” says Sofia Sarmento. “The workshops, for example, are focused on the labour market and market dynamics”, explains Sofia Sarmento.

The lectures were also devoted to industry and its dynamics, and the future. This Thursday, 14th March, engineer Rui Quelhas, Management Team Member Operations Planning & Internal Communication at Tabaqueira and Técnico alumnus gave a lecture on industrial transformation. “We are the only tobacco factory in Portugal and one of the largest Portuguese export companies; we are part of Philip Morris International (PMI)”, said Rui Quelhas. “Tobacco leaves arrive at the factory completely dried. Then the leaves are subjected to a steam treatment to be cut and only after this the cigarette filter is placed as well as the rest of the components”, explained engineer Rui Quelhas. “In total, Tabaqueira produces 22,2 billion cigarettes per year”, he shared.

“We want a smoke-free future. We want that all adult smokers switch to potentially reduced-risk products (IQOS)”, said engineer Rui Quelhas.

On 15th and 16th March, students will have the opportunity to participate in the workshop organised by PwC,  where they will acquire skills for the “Case Study” that closes this year’s edition. According to Sofia Sarmento this will be the highlight of EGI seminar series.
