Gulbenkian Scholarship Programme “New Scientific Talents” recognises the academic merit of 19 Técnico students

The scholarship programme will support different types of projects.

The 2021 edition of the Gulbenkian Scholarship Programme “New Scientific Talents” recognised the academic merit of 19 Técnico students. The scholarship programme awards university students who show outstanding academic merit and allows each scholarship holder to work for one year with a researcher of recognised merit, who exercises the role of tutor.

This year, 50 scholarships were awarded in the fields of Physics, Artificial Intelligence, Mathematics, Environmental Sustainability and Quantum Technologies. The Técnico students are included in all categories.

Técnico is the most represented higher education institution in the field of Mathematics. In total, 6 Técnico students (Applied Mathematics and Computation) were awarded: André Guimarães, João Camarneiro, Nuno Carneiro, Pedro Costa and Pedro Dias. The engineering physics student Luís Machado was also awarded.

Half of the students awarded by Gulbenkian in the field of Physics are Técnico students (Engineering Physics): António Oliveira, Francisca Paiva, João Álvares, João Teixeira and Lízia Branco.

The Técnico students also stood out in the field of Quantum Technologies. The selected students were: André Gomes (Aerospace Engineering), Gabriel Rouxinol (Engineering Physics), Pedro Furtado (Aerospace Engineering), Rodolfo Amorim (Mechanical Engineering) and Tiago Jorge (Engineering Physics).

In the field of Artificial Intelligence, the students selected were Leonor Barreiros (Computer Science and Engineering) and Manuel Graça (Electrical and Computer Engineering).

This year, for the first time, the scholarship programme included the Environmental Sustainability category. The Mechanical Engineering student Bárbara Ribeiro was awarded in this category.

The Gulbenkian Scholarship Programme “New Scientific Talents” was launched in 2017, aiming to stimulate the research capacity and scientific innovation of students in Portuguese higher education institutions.

The scholarship holders will be introduced to research in one of these fields under the guidance of a tutor and will be given the opportunity to take active part in a series of training sessions and workshops.
