In the latest edition of the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) of the Shanghai Ranking, the University of Lisbon (ULisboa) stands out as 1st in Europe and 20th worldwide in the field of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. At national level, ULisboa reinforces its leadership in the areas of Electrical & Electronic Engineering and Civil Engineering, with the latter ranking 3rd in Europe and 20th worldwide. The University’s performance in these areas results exclusively from the contribution of Instituto Superior Técnico. Noteworthy is also the inclusion of a new field – Artificial Intelligence – in which ULisboa also leads at national level, strongly supported by Técnico’s contribution.
The University of Lisbon is the only Portuguese institution included in Automation & Control, Water Resources and Transportation Science & Technology, areas that also have significant relevance at Técnico.
In the engineering fields, 25 subjects were considered, and ULisboa was ranked in 17 engineering sub-areas – two more than in 2024. Globally, ULisboa leads nationally in 23 areas and is present in 41 of the 57 assessed areas, covering Natural Sciences, Life Sciences, Engineering, Medical Sciences and Social Sciences. It also stands out as the only Portuguese university included in the ranking in Geography, Automation & Control, Remote Sensing, Medical Technology, Transportation Science & Technology, Water Resources, Statistics and Political Science.
The ranking assesses the scientific output of institutions over the period from 2020 to 2024. It is a bibliometric ranking, with bibliometric data collected from Web of Science (WOS) and Incites.
To measure the performance of institutions across the various fields, the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects uses a set of academic indicators grouped into five categories:
- World-Class Faculty – considers awards and excellence in the performance of faculty and researchers;
- World-Class Output – considers publications in top-tier journals and international academic awards;
- High-Quality Research – considers the volume of publications in quartile 1 (top 25%) scientific journals;
- Research Impact – measured through the normalised citation impact;
- International Collaboration – highlights the volume of scientific publications produced through international partnerships.
As in 2023 and 2024, Técnico has made a significant contribution to ULisboa’s leading results.
